What does PCV measure?

Packed cell volume, or PCV, represents the percentage of blood volume occupied by red blood cells.

A PCV of 40%, for example, means that approximately 40% of the blood column is made up of packed red blood cells.

It’s a useful measurement when assessing red cell status and can help veterinary teams identify possible anaemia or erythrocytosis.

What is a normal PCV in dogs and cats?

Reference ranges vary between laboratories, species, breeds and individual patients.

As a broad guide, dogs often have PCVs somewhere around 35–55%, while cats commonly fall around 30–45%.

However, these should not be treated as universal cut-offs.

Your practice laboratory or analyser reference interval should always take priority.

This is particularly important because reference intervals can vary depending on the laboratory methodology and population used to establish them.

So if you’re searching for the normal PCV in dogs and cats, don’t simply memorise one number and use it for every patient.

Why does PCV vary?

There are plenty of reasons why two healthy animals might have slightly different PCVs.

Hydration

Hydration status can have a significant effect.

Dehydration can cause haemoconcentration, meaning the proportion of red cells appears increased because there is less plasma relative to the cellular component.

Conversely, fluid administration can dilute the blood and cause the PCV to decrease.

Age

PCV can also vary with age.

Young animals may have different red cell parameters from adults, while older patients may have changes associated with chronic disease.

Breed

Breed differences can also occur.

Some breeds naturally have different haematological parameters, so breed-specific information may be relevant when interpreting borderline results.

Excitement and stress

Cats are a classic example here.

A stressed or frightened cat can experience splenic contraction, releasing stored red blood cells into circulation and temporarily increasing PCV.

That means the sample collected from a very angry cat may not necessarily represent the same value you’d see from the same cat when completely relaxed.

PCV isn’t the same as a diagnosis

This is one of the most important points when thinking about the normal PCV in dogs and cats.

A PCV outside the reference interval doesn’t automatically tell you what’s wrong.

For example, a low PCV may indicate anaemia, but anaemia itself has many possible causes.

Likewise, a high PCV doesn’t automatically mean that an animal has a primary red cell disorder.

Dehydration alone can increase PCV.

The next step is working out why the PCV is low.

What does a high PCV mean?

An increased PCV may occur because there are genuinely more circulating red blood cells, but it can also be caused by reduced plasma volume.

Dehydration is therefore a very common consideration.

Again, interpretation depends on the whole patient.

Why trends are useful

One of the most useful things about PCV is that you can compare it over time.

Imagine a dog arrives following significant blood loss with a PCV of 32%.

On its own, that number doesn’t tell you everything.

But if the PCV was 45% earlier in the day and has subsequently dropped to 32%, that’s a much more meaningful change.

Similarly, if a dehydrated patient starts with a PCV of 58% and falls as they are rehydrated, that trend may be expected.

This is why recording the patient’s PCV accurately matters.

PCV and total solids

PCV becomes even more useful when considered alongside total solids.

For example, low PCV and low total solids can be seen with blood loss, although there are other possibilities.

A low PCV with normal or increased total solids may have a different interpretation.

The important thing is not to use a simple “PCV equals diagnosis” approach.

Think of PCV and total solids as two pieces of information that help you build the bigger picture.

Should you panic over a borderline PCV?

Not necessarily.

A result just outside a reference interval doesn’t automatically mean the patient is critically ill.

Reference ranges describe where most healthy individuals fall. They aren’t magical boundaries between “healthy” and “sick”.

Clinical significance depends on:

  • The degree of change
  • Previous results
  • Clinical signs
  • Hydration status
  • History
  • Other blood results
  • The underlying disease

A PCV of 34% may be much more significant in one patient than another.

When should a PCV be repeated?

If a result doesn’t fit with the clinical picture, repeating the test can sometimes be useful.

For example, if an animal appears clinically well but the PCV is unexpectedly abnormal, check the sample and consider whether there could have been a technical issue.

Similarly, in a hospitalised patient, serial measurements may be used to monitor changes over time.

Final thoughts

Understanding the normal PCV in dogs and cats isn’t really about memorising two numbers.

It’s about understanding what the PCV represents and recognising the factors that can influence it.

Use your laboratory’s reference interval, look at trends and always interpret the PCV alongside the patient’s clinical signs and other findings.

And remember: a number is only useful when you know what the patient is doing around it.
